About This Course

Having conversations about ethical issues is challenging. The ethical choices may not be obvious, the right answer may not be clear, and the conversation may be emotional. But as CPAs, we need to be able to raise, discuss, and resolve ethical issues to fulfill our professional obligations and to live our Code of Conduct.

This course offers a framework for planning for a constructive conversation about ethical issues along with strategies that will equip you with the confidence and skills to initiate and participate in constructive conversations about ethical issues.

In the planning phase, you will explore how to define the ethical issue, clarify your purpose, ensure message clarity, build psychological safety, and secure commitment. This includes understanding different conversation types and how to tailor your approach based on the situation's nature and criteria.

For having the conversation, you will learn to utilize the STATE framework: Share facts, Tell your story, Ask for other views, Talk tentatively, and Encourage testing. Practical techniques are provided for initiating different types of conversations, managing your emotions under stress, and maintaining psychological safety throughout the dialogue.

By the end of this course, you will be equipped with the skills and confidence to approach ethical issues constructively, fostering a more ethical culture in your environment.

Is this course eligible for my CPD requirements as a Canadian CPA?

Provincial regulators of CPAs in Canada do not require that independent providers of CPD be approved to offer courses. Instead, individual CPAs are responsible for assessing whether a CPD activity meets their requirements, and may take activities from any source provided those requirements are met.

Every course offered on LearnFormula is delivered by a qualified subject matter expert or learning organization, and advances learning objectives that are relevant to the responsibilities or professional competencies of Canadian CPAs. All activities on LearnFormula are quantifiable in terms of hours, and are also verifiable, in that users receive documented evidence of their attendance via a certificate of completion after finishing a course (and this certificate is stored by LearnFormula indefinitely). Nearly 100,000 Canadian CPAs successfully satisfy their CPD requirements via LearnFormula on an annual basis.

This was an excellent course on having ethical conversations. I liked the tools offered - the 5 point framework for planning a conversation, the STATE framework for how to have the conversation and a bunch of other tools for self evaluation to prepare. Preparation is a must to ensure you are ready and to ensure the conversation goes smoothly

Excellent, practical course! I highly recommend it. I have taken many ethics courses to meet annual requirements, and this one is by far the best I have taken and/or participated in. Anna's approach provides concrete advice for both preparing for and managing difficult conversations about ethical issues.
