About This Course

As you age and need more care do you want to avoid: • Institutionalization? • Losing independence and control? • Being a burden on family/friends? • Financial hardship? • Relying on government programs?

We all take delight in planning for vacations and holiday celebrations, but when it comes to planning for old age, we literally run the other way. Aging and death only happen to other people, and therefore we don’t need to talk about it – at least not yet. Why is this? • Many Canadians believe the government will provide any needed care • It won’t happen to me • My spouse will look after me • The kids will look after me

Additional reasons we should care about aging and care are obvious: • 225,000 Canadians turn 65 every year • By 2038, over 1,125,200,000 Canadians will have Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia unless a cure is found before then • COVID-19 has turned our long term health care system upside down

These realities make it abundantly clear that we all need to plan for old age – and not just financially. We need to understand the health care system where we live, plan where we wish to age and live out our lives and communicate our wishes to family members health care providers. COVID-19 has only reinforced the need to plan.

Credit Information

Is this course eligible for my CPD requirements as a Canadian CPA?

Provincial regulators of CPAs in Canada do not require that independent providers of CPD be approved to offer courses. Instead, individual CPAs are responsible for assessing whether a CPD activity meets their requirements, and may take activities from any source provided those requirements are met.

Every course offered on LearnFormula is delivered by a qualified subject matter expert or learning organization, and advances learning objectives that are relevant to the responsibilities or professional competencies of Canadian CPAs. All activities on LearnFormula are quantifiable in terms of hours, and are also verifiable, in that users receive documented evidence of their attendance via a certificate of completion after finishing a course (and this certificate is stored by LearnFormula indefinitely). Nearly 100,000 Canadian CPAs successfully satisfy their CPD requirements via LearnFormula on an annual basis.

As I retire in 3 weeks at age 70 this is a somewhat rude awakening about the state and availability of long term care facilities. Covid as pointed out has exposed to the general public the many deficiencies of long term care. I just update my will and power of attorney last week so I feel good about that but too late to buy affordable long term care insurance. I will however have a good talk with my financial advisor. Thanks for the wake up call and reminders.
