About This Course

Most accountants grow through referrals, but referrals are limited and you can’t control when they come. In this session, a CPA who left PwC and built his practice through social media to more than 500,000 followers shows how marketing really works for accounting firms. His core point is that marketing is about building trust.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Move people from cold to warm to hot audiences, and why you should give value before you ask for anything.
  • Design lead magnets that collect contact details people actually want to hand over.
  • Measure the inputs you control instead of trying to measure trust.
  • Find realistic time for marketing each week.
  • Treat sales as a diagnosis rather than pushing, learn from objections, and know what a healthy close rate looks like.
  • Get out of the race to the bottom on price by building offers around the value equation, with practical ideas such as audit support, guaranteed turnaround times and niche expertise.
  • Approach posting your fees and moving to monthly subscription pricing.
  • Get past the fear of being on camera.

The session includes live sales role-plays and group exercises, so you can see the ideas in action and apply them to your own practice right away.

Topics covered

  • Why marketing is about trust, and the J-curve of trust
  • Hot, warm and cold audiences, and the limits of referrals
  • Credibility and the trust ladder
  • Giving value before asking (“jab, jab, jab, right hook”)
  • Lead magnets and collecting contact information
  • Measuring marketing inputs versus outcomes
  • Time management for marketing (2–3 hours a day)
  • Sales as diagnosis, not persuasion
  • Learning from objections, and close-rate benchmarks (30–40%)
  • Live sales role-play demonstrations
  • Risk considerations: insurance, engagement letters and separating marketing activities
  • Overcoming fear of the camera and handling online trolls
  • Avoiding price competition by adding value to your offers
  • The value equation: dream outcome, perceived likelihood, time delay, effort and sacrifice
  • Posting fees, price ranges and monthly subscription pricing

Credit Information

Is this course eligible for my CPD requirements as a Canadian CPA?

Provincial regulators of CPAs in Canada do not require that independent providers of CPD be approved to offer courses. Instead, individual CPAs are responsible for assessing whether a CPD activity meets their requirements, and may take activities from any source provided those requirements are met.

Every course offered on LearnFormula is delivered by a qualified subject matter expert or learning organization, and advances learning objectives that are relevant to the responsibilities or professional competencies of Canadian CPAs. All activities on LearnFormula are quantifiable in terms of hours, and are also verifiable, in that users receive documented evidence of their attendance via a certificate of completion after finishing a course (and this certificate is stored by LearnFormula indefinitely). Nearly 100,000 Canadian CPAs successfully satisfy their CPD requirements via LearnFormula on an annual basis.
