CPAs in Canada require Continuing Professional Development to maintain their designation. Browse courses that meet your requirements, or choose one of our course packages, specially curated to contain all the hours and credits you need, in one place. The courses on CPDFormula may count towards professionally relevant, verifiable learning activities. It is the CPA's responsibility to validate whether an activity is an eligible educational activity for their professional development requirements based on their own learning needs.
CPD Requirements – Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario (CPA Ontario)
Annual CPD Requirements
All CPA Ontario members (unless formally exempt) must complete a minimum of 20 CPD hours each calendar year (January 1 to December 31). At least 50% of the annual minimum (10 hours) must be verifiable.
Rolling Three-Year Requirements
Members must complete 120 CPD hours in each rolling three-year period, including at least 60 verifiable hours. Each rolling three-year period must also include 4 verifiable hours in professional ethics.
Eligible CPD Activities
CPD must be relevant to professional responsibilities and CPA competencies, quantifiable in hours, and contain significant intellectual or practical content. Common eligible activities include instructor-led courses, webinars, conferences/seminars, formal education programs, exams, and instruction/speaking in relevant subject areas. Activities that are not professionally relevant (e.g., personal-interest learning) generally do not qualify.
Course / Provider Accreditation
CPA Ontario does not require CPD providers or individual courses to be formally accredited or approved. Members may complete CPD from a range of providers, provided the activity meets CPA Ontario’s CPD rules and the member can retain appropriate evidence of completion.
Reporting, Record-Keeping & Audit
Members submit a CPD declaration annually as part of the AMD/CPD process (typically available starting in April) and must meet the declaration deadline of June 1 following the reporting year. Members must keep CPD records and supporting documentation for at least five years in case of audit.
