Serving as a juror is a cornerstone of Canada’s democracy. Citizens have a direct role in helping administer justice. But years of stagnant pay, poor return-to-work supports, and psychological trauma has given the public a negative perception of jury duty. Chris Mines is joined by Mark Farrant, founder, and CEO of the Canadian Juries Commission. They discuss how jury duty can become a more sustainable process and how stronger support can lead to a greater sense of civic pride.
Some of the topics covered in this course include:
The implications of low pay and employer support
The ramifications of lengthy trials on the jury selection pool
How workplaces can strengthen employer accommodation
Highlighting psychological injuries from gruesome trials and changes to the Criminal Code
An overview of Bill S-206
Steps to strengthen juror awareness and more!
